Minor ailments and contraception
Pharmacists in British Columbia can assess and, where appropriate, prescribe for a range of minor ailments and for contraception. Assessments take place in the pharmacy.
Conditions we can help with
- Eyes, nose and mouth: pink eye and eye allergies; allergies and hay fever; cold sores; canker sores; oral thrush
- Skin: acne; skin irritation (dermatitis); shingles; impetigo; insect bites and hives; athlete’s foot; jock itch; ringworm; nail fungus; dandruff; diaper rash
- Urinary and reproductive: uncomplicated urinary tract infection; vaginal yeast infection; menstrual cramps; birth control; emergency contraception (morning-after pill)
- Other: heartburn; headache; muscle strains and sprains; pinworms and threadworms
For some conditions the pharmacist can prescribe; for others we recommend a non-prescription treatment or refer you to a doctor. The Province publishes the list of minor ailments pharmacists can prescribe for.
Cost
Assessments for the minor ailments on the Province’s list, and for contraception, are free for BC residents with active MSP coverage and a Personal Health Number; the Province pays the pharmacy for them. If you’re not covered, the assessment is $25. Many prescription contraceptives are also free for BC residents through PharmaCare. Other medications are charged as usual.
At your visit the pharmacist will assess you and recommend the best care, which might be a prescription, a non-prescription product, self-care advice or a referral to a doctor. A prescription isn’t guaranteed.
Save time
You’ll soon be able to fill in the assessment forms online before your visit, so your appointment is quicker.
When to see a doctor instead
If your symptoms are severe or getting worse, or the pharmacist finds your condition needs a doctor, we’ll refer you. In an emergency, call 9-1-1.
